Mercantilism - TPP: ‘Free’ Trade and the Sovereignty Squeeze
A piece of news recently became popular in China: Germany is now the world’s largest trade surplus “bogeyman,” thanks to its persistent adherence to mercantilist policies. Germany’s high trade surplus – the biggest ever recorded in German history – attained amidst a wobbly economic recovery in Europe reminds China that the latter is hardly alone in pursuing economic policies that prioritize national interest over global and regional considerations of economic efficiency and political stability.
The classic mercantilism, the one associated with the idea that the precious metals obtained through a favorable balance of foreign trade were essential to a powerful nation, may be historically obsolete. The core of the mercantilist view, namely that self-interested states maximize economic development by optimizing political control to strengthen national power, is very much alive and well. Indeed, the vitality of mercantilism as a state of mind may have infiltrated every corner of the international political economy. If one considers the essence of mercantilism through Robert Gilpin’s definition – the attempt of governments to manipulate economic arrangements in order to maximize their own interests

Biggest Solar Flares in 25 Years
(

A massive solar eruption on 26 October was the sixth large flare since 19 October, all emanating from one gigantic sunspot called AR 12192. Measuring 129,000 kilometres across, it's the largest sunspot since 1990. For comparison, that's a spot 10 times the diameter of Earth. Does it pose dangers to us? MORE

My taste and some photos of the delicious persimmons in Youngdong South Korea
I got here just in time for the persimmons harvest in Youngdong South Korea.
I was also in Youngdong for the grape harvest and festival.
But the persimmon trees are everywhere.
The trees look as if they are covered with orange Christmas ornaments while dropping their leaves.
Everywhere you look some one is picking persimmons.
Some to be sold at market, others for home use.
Many are peeled then hung up to dry outside to be eaten at a later date.
The frost enhances their taste.
Youngdong and the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful places in South Korea.
The people are some of the nicest and welcoming you would ever want to meet.
Their sense of sharing is something i have never seen before. It is a custom that just comes naturally to them.
I love it here.

Free Download War and Peace: Excerpt Pierre speaks to Joseph Alexeevich Bazdeev a Free Mason
"The highest wisdom is not founded on reason alone, not on those worldly sciences of physics, history, chemistry, and the like, into which intellectual knowledge is divided. The highest wisdom is one. The highest wisdom has but one science—the science of the whole the science explaining the whole creation and man's place in it. To receive that science it is necessary to purify and renew one's inner self, and so before one can know, it is necessary to believe and to perfect one's self. And to attain this end, we have the light called conscience that God has implanted in our souls."
"Yes, yes," assented Pierre

Tattooed, pot-smoking mummy gets MRI scan
A recent MRI scan on the mummified remains of a Siberian princess has uncovered the cause of her death some 2,500 years ago.
Russian scientists learned from the scan that the princess whose body was discovered in 1993 died of breast cancer. It was also learned that the “Siberian Ice Maiden” likely smoked marijuana to cope with pain.
Preserved by ice, the body was originally discovered by Russian archaeologists in the Altai Mountains. The remains drew interest because the body was covered with intricate tattoos, fine clothing and jewelry, the Siberian Times reports.
The MRI scan showed that the princess had suffered from osteomyelitis, an infection of bone marrow. She also suffered a fractured skull jest before her death. However, the ultimate cause of death was cancer, the scientists said.
A container of cannabis was found next to the mummy, and the scientists believe she was using it to cope with pain.
The Siberian Times reported that the mummy has “brought extraordinary advances in our understanding of the rich and ingenious Pazyryk culture.”
The Pazyryk culture has been identified by artifacts and mummified remains in the Altay Mountains and also in Mongolia.

When It Comes to Beheadings, ISIS Has Nothing Over Saudi Arabia
If you are a prisoner in Riyadh, the capital, you might be taken to the ocher-colored Deera Square, which has acquired a macabre sobriquet: Chop Chop Square. Before you arrive, police and security forces will have prepared the area. It may have been cordoned off to keep curious spectators at a distance, but they will congregate nonetheless.

Beyond Orwellian Nightmares and Neoliberal Authoritarianism By Henry A. Giroux
Those who fight against neoliberalism must not settle for reforming a system that is as broken as it is dangerous. Any viable, transformative struggle will need a boldly democratic vision; durable, longstanding organizations and strategies that make politics meaningful.
To be corrupted by totalitarianism, one does not have to live in a totalitarian country.
- George Orwell
Central to George Orwell's nightmarish vision of a totalitarian society was a government so powerful that it not only dominated all of the major institutions in a society, but it also was quite adept at making invisible its inner workings of power. This is what some have called a shadow government, deep state, dual state or corporate state. (1) In the deep state, politics becomes the domain of the ultra-wealthy, the powerful few who run powerful financial services, big corporations and the imperious elite of the defense industries and other components of the military-industrial complex. Corporate interests such as ExxonMobil and other fossil fuel companies, megabanks such as Bank of America, and defense industries such as Boeing, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin are powerful lobbying groups and as such have control of the major seats of political power and the commanding institutions necessary to insure that the deeply anti-democratic state rules in the interests of the few while exploiting and repressing the many.

UK Parliament Voting On Recognition of Palestine
By Voting Today for Recognition of Palestine, MPs Will Vote for Equality and for Peace | Richard Burden
But when it comes to Palestinians, the equation changes. For too long those same principles - of self-determination and recognition of their independent state - have been considered matters of privilege for Palestinians, not as their right. Even today in our own Parliament, some MPs have tabled an amendment favoured by the Government of Israel which would make UK recognition of the Palestinian state conditional, not only on negotiations taking place between Palestine and Israel, but on the outcome of those negotiations. In other words, they are asking the UK Parliament to give Israel the right of veto over our own decisions. That is as unacceptable as suggesting that the Palestinians should have had a veto over UK recognition of Israel all those years ago.

Kerry: Saving Kobane not part of strategy (IncludesVideo)
"Kobane does not define the strategy for the coalition in respect to Daesh [ISIL in Arabic]. Kobane is one community and it is a tragedy what is happening there. And we do not diminish that," Kerry said.
"But we have said from day one that it is going to take a period of time to bring the coalition thoroughly to the table to rebuild some of the morale and capacity of the Iraqi army. And to begin the focus of where we ought to be focusing first which is in Iraq. That is the current strategy."
Kobane is their sacrificial lamb in order to justify going all in.
This is not a strategy, it is massacre in the making.
Kerry a Nam vet should have remembered.
"We had to destroy Ben Tre in order ot save it"
We helped create this monster.
It is high time that we acknowledge this.
Iraq is a failed state due to our illegal shock and awe.
Now they want the same for Syria.

No wonder Obama's strategy is in tatters when some of his allies support ISIS - Stop the War Coalition
In the face of a likely Isis victory at Kobani, senior US officials have been trying to explain away the failure to save the Syrian Kurds in the town, probably Isis's toughest opponents in Syria. "Our focus in Syria is in degrading the capacity of [Isis] at its core to project power, to command itself, to sustain itself, to resource itself," said US Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken, in a typical piece of waffle designed to mask defeat. "The tragic reality is that in the course of doing that there are going to be places like Kobani where we may or may not be able to fight effectively."
