Who Were The First Americans?
Ancestry of first Americans revealed by a boy's genome - life - 12 February 2014 - New Scientist
WE MAY never know who the Anzick child was. Why he died, just 3 years old, in the foothills of the American Rockies; why he was buried, 12,600 years ago, beneath a huge cache of sharpened flints; or why his kin left him with a bone tool that had been passed down the generations for 150 years.

Why America is losing the war on terror
Rula Jebreal: Why America is losing the war on terror — and the Islam debate is so flawed - Salon.com
An enemy that had comprised a couple of hundred desperate men hiding in caves in eastern Afghanistan when the “war on terror” got underway following the 9/11 attacks is incarnated today as 20,000 fighting men in the Islamic State movement. And far from hiding in caves, ISIS has brazenly raised its black flag over vast swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq – countries that, in 2001, had been two of the most secular societies in the Middle East.

How the Washington Press Turned Bad

Coincidentally, upon hearing of Bradlee’s death on Oct. 21, I was reminded of this sad devolution of the U.S. news media – from its Watergate/Pentagon Papers heyday of the 1970s to the “On Bended Knee” obsequiousness in covering Ronald Reagan just a decade later, a transformation that paved the way for the media’s servile groveling at the feet of George W. Bush last decade.
History haunts U.S.-Iran talks
History haunts U.S.-Iran talks | The Japan Times
Bill Clinton tried. So did George W. Bush. Neither succeeded. As President Barack Obama’s own second term winds down, he is getting closer than either of his immediate predecessors to the goal of improving U.S. relations with Iran. But he is not there yet, and plenty stands in the way, including a messy and brutal conflict in Iraq and Syria.

‘We crossed the line’: US mea culpa at UN panel on use of torture
‘We crossed the line’: US mea culpa at UN panel on use of torture — RT USA
Ten independent experts from the UN anti-torture body gathered to ‘grill’ some 30 senior US officials, including McLeod, in Geneva, Switzerland, for the first time since 2006. The committee discussed issues dealing with torture at CIA ‘black sites’, Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba and detention of illegal immigrants.
"There's sort of a common denominator about all of our questions, and that is implementation of transparency and accountability," Jens Modvig, one of the panel's investigators, told AFP.
A day before the panel, the committee gathered evidence from anti-torture activists, death penalty experts, Murat Kurnaz, a former Guantanamo detainee, and the parents of Michael Brown, a black teenage boy from Ferguson, Missouri, who was shot in August by a white police officer.

Pro-Israel Billionaires To Buy NYT?
Pro-Israel billionaires Adelson and Saban muse over buying the New York Times – Mondoweiss
Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino magnate and his co-horts at the Israeli American Council (IAC), launched off their first ever inaugural “Israeli-American Conference” in D.C. over the weekend (because Israel deserves another annual event for supporters in Washington, no doubt). Conveniently timed right after our elections, Haaretz reported last week we should expect some “gloating and Schadenfreude at [the] groundbreaking meeting”, and they were right.

Iraq War Veteran, Outspoken War Critic Tomas Young Dead at 34
In 2013 Young wrote "The Last Letter: A Message to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney From a Dying Veteran." From the letter:
You may evade justice but in our eyes you are each guilty of egregious war crimes, of plunder and, finally, of murder, including the murder of thousands of young Americans—my fellow veterans—whose future you stole.
Asked by Democracy Now! last year how he would want to be remembered, he said: "That I fought as hard as I could to keep young men and women away from military service. I fought as hard as I could to keep another me from coming back to Iraq."
Watch Young reading his letter to Bush and Cheney below:

RMB (Renminbi) Clearing Bank Opens in Seoul
7 NOVEMBER 2014
An RMB clearing bank has officially opened in the Euljiro district of Seoul. The Bank of Communications of China held its opening ceremony on Nov. 6, attended by Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol, Bank of Communications Chairman Niu Siming, and many others.
The clearing bank is going to be responsible for Korean companies’ yuan-based settlements in transactions with China. Before its opening, they had to go through a Korean bank, then a commercial bank in Hong Kong, a clearing bank in Hong Kong, and finally the China National Advanced Payment System (CNAPS) of the People's Bank of China for yuan-based payments and collections. However, the procedure is now simplified to three steps including a Korean bank, the Bank of Communications, and CNAPS, which means they can save fees and avoid financial risks.
At the same time, the clearing bank is supposed to fulfill the function of an off-shore branch of the People's Bank of China supplying short-term yuan liquidity.
When yuan-based transactions take place in Korea, a temporary liquidity shortage could follow. In this case, the clearing bank provides short-term loans for commercial banks and securities companies in Korea, the Korea Securities Depository, etc.
